NOLA SHRM December Newsletter

    December 1, 2016

    Dear NOLA SHRM member,

Welcome to our new newsletter!  I hope that you find this central location for NOLA SHRM news to be a helpful resource.

This holiday season, I would like to say how thankful I am for each of you and for NOLA SHRM.  This organization has grown over the last several years and it makes me proud to see that more and more HR practitioners are joining us for networking and professional development opportunities.  Our leadership team strives to ensure we offer you the best programming available through our lunch meetings and our annual conference, and to make sure that we offer credits to help you maintain your HR certifications.  I hope that you have all found meaningful development offerings and connections with your peers through NOLA SHRM that have helped you in your HR career.

Thank you for your contributions to our work in the community.   The impact that HR professionals can make is priceless.  From our HR audit with Liberty’s Kitchen, to the mock interview day with students at the St. Charles Parish Satellite Center, to the presentations for students at Job Corps to help guide them into our local workforce – it all makes a difference and could not have been accomplished without you.

As we move into 2017, I look forward to NOLA SHRM’s growth and continued efforts to help you move forward in the HR profession.  I am also eagerly anticipating the national conference in June so let’s do NOLA proud and be the best host city for the 2017 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition!

Thank you for letting me serve as your President in 2016.  It has been an honor to be a leader for NOLA SHRM.  Happy Holidays to you and your family.  See you in 2017!

    Erin Thompson, SHRM-CP, PHR

    2016 NOLA SHRM President

NOLA SHRM bonds are strong, so I am sure you will still see them active in the chapter in other ways!

Did you know there is a new I-9 form?

The ‘newly revised Form I-9’ came out Nov 14th.  I’m one of a dozen SME Form I-9 and E-Verify speakers, that work in the very U.S. Citizenship and Immigration office that houses both the I-9 and E-Verify.  I high encourage you forward this invitation to your members.

I’ll be conducting two free webinars, on Dec 6th @ 12:00pm EST & Dec 16th @ 1:00pm EST, for SHRM Southwest region members on the ‘revised Form I-9’.   Unsure if Southwest State Councils were able to forward on my original invite (below) to their chapters, I’m sending this message directly to each chapter.   A lot of  info will be discussed along with the new fields and the difference between the ‘pen to paper’ and ‘fillable’ versions.  I can guarantee you that my session will be like no other government presentation you’ve attended!

There are many changes on the I-9 with several ‘new’ fields…..

    When:  Dec 16th  -  12:00 - 1:00pm CST

Not so fast... FLSA Overtime Changes are on hold

On Nov. 22, 2016, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Department of Labor's (DOL's) new federal overtime rule, which would have raised the Fair Labor Standards Act's (FLSA's) salary threshold for exemption from overtime pay from $23,660 to $47,476 as of Dec. 1, 2016. On Dec. 1, 2016, the DOL appealed the injunction. If a stay is granted, the rule will be effective; if not, it could take quite some time for a final ruling.

Stay tuned to National SHRM and NOLA SHRM for the latest updates and best practices.  For the latest SHRM updates on the overtime regulations, click here.

    SHRM ACCREDITATION

SHRM is proud to announce that the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams have been accredited by The Buros Center for Testing, a pronouncement that the HR credentials meet the highest standards in testing.

The Buros Center is the premier test review center located at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; it accredited SHRM Certification less than two years after the credentials were launched.

The Buros Center has reviewed or accredited other well-known tests, including major state educational achievement exams; admissions tests for medical school, law school and graduate school; and licensure exams for physical therapists, clinicians and technicians. To learn more about The Buros Center for Testing, visit buros.org.

To achieve accreditation, SHRM submitted a 1,900-page application documenting its testing practices, methodology and policy. The thorough review process took six months to complete and included site visits of SHRM and its testing vendors.

Since the launch of the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP two years ago, SHRM has worked to gain recognition as the global standard in HR certification. Achieving accreditation further demonstrates to HR professionals and their employers that SHRM-certified professionals meet the high standards expected and needed in HR today.

SHRM celebrates this milestone with more than 96,000 SHRM-certified professionals, the fastest-growing HR certification community. The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP are the most widely-taken HR exams in the world.

Recertification Made Easy with Tech-Savvy Features

A trio of recently introduced mobile and online features brings welcome efficiencies to the recertification process for SHRM-certified professionals:
